Missing friend
Missing friend
To the editor: A short while back my good friend Larry Reynolds from Omena passed. Larry was a U.S. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM

To the editor: Easy answers to complex problems invite unintended, often dangerous unforeseen consequences. Simple solutions are inappropriate for most social issues, which are complex, often ambiguous, and require nuanced consideration. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
Shining light on January 6
Shining light on January 6
To the editor: For Christians, January 6th marks The Epiphany, when light pierced darkness revealing the Christ Child to the Gentiles. Every four years, our democracy shines its light through the peaceful transition of power. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
Stable democracy threatened
Stable democracy threatened
To the editor: A new political party, No Labels, has emerged and has the potential to be a spoiler in the 2024 Presidential election. Their stratagem is a divisive and hazardous gambit jeopardizing America’s future. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM

Respect … civility
Respect … civility
To the editor: These past few years have revealed turmoil in our county government in terms of direction and management. This past week, an outside consultant hired by the Board of Commissioners reported on his findings after talking with / hearing from 75% of the employees. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
‘Guardrails’ not to be trusted
‘Guardrails’ not to be trusted
To the editor: In his 12/28/23 letter to the editor, David Edelstein utilizes his observation that “guardrails” have been applied to free speech as justification for limits that should also be applied to our right to bear arms. I appreciate his comparison, which undermines his point. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
Applause for Conservancy
Applause for Conservancy
To the editor: In contrast to the recent letters published in this paper, I applaud the Leelanau Conservancy for their creation of a wonderful trail system! The trails for biking are well designed, minimally impactful on the Forest, and provide a superb outdoor recreational experience. The trails are not very wide and therefore, they are one way only. 01/03/2024 07:41 PM
Greater Good is important
Greater Good is important
To the editor: One of the fundamental principles in a democracy is making decisions based on the Common Good. The FOIA issue currently facing the entire Leelanau County government is a solid case of actions which threaten this greater good. 01/03/2024 07:41 PM
Committed to EMT/Fire Services
Committed to EMT/Fire Services
To the editor: After a series of public meetings and some on-line misinformation we wanted to confirm our commitment to EMT/Fire services while maintaining our fiduciary responsibilities to our taxpayers. In September we negotiated a three-year agreement with our EMT/Fire services, lifting their compensation from last in the County to toptier. 01/03/2024 07:41 PM
Mental health concerns
Mental health concerns
To the editor: According to the MDHHS CON Annual Survey, psychiatric emergencies are the second most common reason people present to Acute Care Hospitals across the state (cardiac emergencies are at the top of the list). Our local Munson ER is reflective of this reality; in each of the last seven years people sought emergency services primarily because of their hearts and heads. 01/03/2024 07:41 PM
Hope for 2024
Hope for 2024
To the editor: Looking ahead to 2024, I am hopeful that as a community we will open our hearts and minds to see our neighbors through eyes rooted in kindness. As we face uncertainty in our world, we are our best as members of society when we look and act with kindness toward our brothers and sisters, particularly those who are struggling. 01/03/2024 07:41 PM
