Tennis success, travel stories in Omena
Congratulations to the Glen Lake/St. Mary co-op tennis team for its historic win of the 2024 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Regional Championship, the first time winning the title since 2002, more than two decades ago. The Laker’s upset came at the regional tournament hosted Thursday by the St. Francis Gladiators, Glen Lake’s longtime rival. Omena resident and St. Mary School junior, William Krusel, and his Glen Lake sophomore partner, Porter Martin, playing No. 3 doubles, won two of their three matches in the tournament. While the Lakers walked away with the Regional Championship, both teams qualified for the state championships at the Midland Tennis Center on Oct. 21-22. Best of luck at States!

Health board OKs 2024-2025 budget
The Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department (BLDHD) will soon have a “new” health officer. The Board of Health has decided that the department needs a health officer of its own.

Wood finds purpose in the outdoors
Claire Wood, communications director for the Leelanau Conservancy in Leland, moved to the county in her 20s and she now calls the area home. She says that her job combines her love for storytelling with the great outdoors, and she is a member of several nonprofits and a committee.

Zoning change OK’d in Suttons Bay Twp.
The Suttons Bay Township board agreed to allow personal/ commercial storage units in the township’s waste management zoning district at its October regular meeting. The owner of a former waste transfer station plans to sell these types of units for storage, warehousing, and other industrial uses.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrated in Leland
Dozens of people attended various events for Indigenous Peoples’ Day at the Leland Cultural Campus Monday afternoon. Activities centered around honoring and sharing the culture, art, and history of the local Anishinaabek, which began with singers from the drum group Dusty Bear and tribal community dancers performing at the Leland Township Library back lawn.

Decisive leader needed
To the editor: The present County Board has failed to hire a permanent county administrator. Commissioner Kama Ross, representing Leland and Centerville Townships, cast the only no vote against continuing the process in a speedy fashion.
