Restoration on North Manitou Island
The Katie Shepard Hotel peaks through the trees as the park boat approaches the beach on North Manitou Island. This is the 13th year that national park partner, Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear (PHSB) and its volunteers have come to the island to repair historic structures.

Woodland Herb Farm “a labor of love”
Operating the small but charming Woodland Herb Farm and Twisted Whiskers shop for more than 40 years now has always been a labor of love for owner Pat Bourdo. The shop was once a garage on the property and transformed into a storefront in 1977. Since then, many people have come to know the business as a unique place to find herbs and seasonings galore, as well as other popular crafts such as various designs of hand-sewn catnip toys.

Permits OK'd for 6 duplexes in S-B
Suttons Bay Village recently issued land use permits for 12 residential units across six duplexes at the north end of the village in July and August. This is part of the Harbor Heights development, which will eventually consist of 32 units across 16 duplexes on Waypoint Circle Drive, at the end of North Duester Park Lane.

Frankfort painter Ellie Harold traveled to Paris in 2022, a pilgrimage to view an exhibition of paintings by Impressionist Claude Monet and Abstract Expressionist Joan Mitchell. The souvenirs from that trip weren’t T-shirts and tote bags, but questions, including: What does it mean to be a “real” artist? Harold explores that question in the resulting book, “Monet, Mitchell & Me: A Painter’s Pilgrimage.” She talks about how she answered that question at the Sept.
