To the editor: How interesting to read in the Enterprise ( Cleveland Addresses Segment 9) that Jan Nowak, along with Tim Stein and Angie Diotte, have flip flopped on their support of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail route extension. It was, after all, Jan’s motion to support a resolution at the September 10, 2019 Cleveland Township Board meeting in favor of the proposed route.

The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners seems to have reached a consensus Tuesday that the next board should choose their own administrator, as the current board is unlikely to hire one before the Nov. 5 elections anyway.

Announcement of minimum wage increases has Leelanau Country establishments looking over their finances with concern for the future of their businesses and the people they employ. Knot Just a Bar owner David Waskiewicz said it is not uncommon for a server to make $25-30 an hour after tips with a professional server bringing home a yearly W-2 of $50,000.

In an Aug. 2 letter from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsacik, she pleaded for relief as “Michigan is experiencing a natural disaster for sweet cherry production.”

Construction of a controversial proposal to extend of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail (SBHT) failed to get support this week from the Cleveland Township Board. However, a final decision is expected during the board’s September meeting.

John H. Hoppin Jr, of Northport, Michigan, and Vero Beach, Florida, died at age 105 on August 8, 2024 in Northport. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian Zimmerman Hoppin, his parents John H. Hoppin Sr and Bessie Woodcock Hoppin, and his four sisters. John is survived by his daughters Martha Hoppin, Anne (Tony) Hill, and Rebecca ( John) Freeman, 5 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

Frank J. “Mike” Mikos, 91, of Lake Leelanau, died Friday, August 9, 2024 in Suttons Bay. A celebration of Mike’s life will be announced at a later date, a full obituary will be published upon the family’s approval.
