Honey harvesting on the peninsula
The Leelanau peninsula is known for its beauty, from the waters that surround it and the orchards that produce fruit, to the farms that grow vegetables and flowers that so many people enjoy. Harvests for these homegrown crops are made possible by so many variables, including pollinators like bees. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM

Former Omena Mayor tapped as grand marshal
The Office of former Omena Mayor, Rosie Disch, is pleased to announce that she will be the Grand Marshal of the Cedar Polka Fest Parade on Saturday, August 24 at 1 p.m. The organizers were anxiously awaiting the results of the recent election in Omena to invite the new mayor. However, when it was announced that the mayor was a horse and the vice mayors were cats, the honor fell to Rosie. Not only is the theme of the event this year “The Dog Days of Summer”, but, as the organizers explained, the horse would not fit in the convertible, and the cats would be hard to see above the dashboard. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM

The owners of what could arguably be the most lavish home in northern Michigan are asking the state Tax Tribunal reduce their property tax assessment. The Celebration Life Trust is appealing the Leland Township Board of Review’s decision to deny a request to reduce the assessment on the property which, according to township records, has a true cash value of just over $24 million. *** Jim Munoz remembers the first time he saw the man who would become his best friend — Larry Glass. Glass was down on a dock at Fishtown, trying to catch a fish, Munoz said he was across the river from Glass and knew that a Big Ten coach had moved to Leland. “I walked over and introduced myself and that was the beginning of a 50-plus year friendship,” he said. Glass, 84, died Monday at Medilodge in Suttons Bay. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM
