First school established in Northport/ Omena
From “A History of Leelanau Township” by the Leelanau Township Historical Writers Group The first school in the area was started by the Rev. George N. Smith. After it was completed it became a focal point, a “headquarters” of sorts for the pioneer settlement. Rev. Smith taught school on the weekdays and conducted his Sunday services and Sabbath school there. Singing school was held in the schoolhouse on 2 evening during the week. The building was also used for Town Meeting, Court proceeding, Indian Council meetings, and the first election was held in the school house, Nov. 7, 1854, when out of 94 polled only cast votes for Temperance and Freedom. 06/05/2024 08:28 PM

Elks down Comets in final
Leland fell to Elk Rapids in the district championship 5-1 on Thursday. The Elks 3-peat as district champions. Leland had trouble capitalizing on opportunities while the Elks got out to a quick 3-0 lead 10 minutes into the second half. Comet freshman Lillian Connor broke the Elk Rapids shutout with a dashing goal past the goalkeeper and falling into the net. Lake Leelanau St. Mary softball went into Friday’s MHSAA Div. 4 softball tournament Friday as an underdog, facing the No. 1-seed Buckley Bears in the district semifinal. Despite the odds, the Eagles came out victorious to win its fourth district championship in a row 4-2. 06/05/2024 08:28 PM
