Susan Finke died peacefully on February 18, 2024, three months shy of her 100th birthday, at The Highlands in Northport, Michigan. Susan was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 17, 1924, to Harry J. Finke, Jr., and Georgia Strietmann Finke. She graduated from the Hillsdale School and, in 1946, from Wellesley College. She then worked for three years as the personal secretary to Dr. Gustav Eckstein at the University of Cincinnati. After leaving Dr. Eckstein’s employ, she attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City, after which she moved to Washington, D.C. to take a secretarial position at the Central Intelligence Agency. Vern L. Schaub, 90, of North Branch, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2024, at his home. Vern was born in Lake Leelanau, MI, on July 26, 1933, to William and Violet Schaub. He worked on the family farm and graduated eighth grade at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Lake Leelanau. He later moved to North Branch and worked at Chaso Royco before taking a job with the State of Michigan at Oakdale Center in Lapeer. After retiring as supervisor from Oakdale Center, he worked at Suncrest in Lapeer, MI. He married Lorraine Lange on May 28, 1960, at SS Peter and Paul in North Branch. He was a long-time member of SS Peter and Paul and volunteered for many years. Vern was a passionate gardener and was known for his beautiful flowers and garden, which he kept with for as long as he was able. He had a strong work ethic and a good sense of humor. He gave generously of his time and work to his family, friends and neighbors. One of his favorite pastimes was visiting with passers-by as he worked in his garden all summer. 02/21/2024 04:57 PM

It seems unlikely that hunting in Leelanau will be directly affected by the discovery of a bovine tuberculosis-infected deer in southwest Benzie County. But Emily Sewell, who leads the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) response team to the discovery of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in the wild deer herd, said cooperation from hunters will be sought to help identify and control the disease. 02/21/2024 04:57 PM

No snow woes; ice fishing non-exsistent
Winter has provided more cross country skiing than ice fishing opportunities, which doesn’t say much. “During the 10 days of winter, we groomed about every other day, and it was great,” said Kerry Kelly, chairman of the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes organization that maintains the Heritage Trail through volunteers. 02/21/2024 04:57 PM
