Joyce elected Road Commission chair
The Leelanau County Road Commission elected a new chairman following its annual organizational meeting Tuesday. In a roll call vote, Bob Joyce was elected chairman with votes from himself and road commissioners Jim Calhoun and Greg Mikowski.

Recorded births doubled in 2023
For the first time in recent history, births were the only vital statistic which increased from 2022 to 2023 in Leelanau County. According to the county clerk’s office, which is the register of county vital statistics, the total number of births, marriages, divorces and deaths recorded in 2023 was 458, down 3.5% from the previous year.

Property fraud attempt reported in Leelanau
The Leelanau County register of deeds recently received another complaint about a third party fraudulently attempting to sell land without the owner’s knowledge. This is the latest in a series of property fraud schemes reported to the register of deeds office, all of which have targeted vacant land.

Broadband initiative to reach underserved areas
Point Broadband’s initiative to bring high-speed internet to “unserved” and “underserved” homes in Leelanau County may not be completed until the end of this year, according to the latest projections by the Opelika, Alabama-based internet service provider. However, the county’s project consultant feels that the network could still be finished in June depending on some external factors.

First feline Omena mayor passes
Sweet Tart McKee, a Norwegian Forest cat and the former Mayor of Omena from 2018 – 2021, died on Christmas Eve. She was the fifth Mayor of Omena, the first feline after four dogs, and the first to become an international sensation. Following her election, she received emails and letters from around the world, and appeared on websites in many countries, with the news of her election translated into quite a few languages. She was even talked about on the Anderson Cooper 360 show, along with her Vice Mayor, Punkin Anderson-Harder. She was 14 ½ years old.
