To the editor: The Gun Violence Archive verifies that 38,568 Americans died of gunshot wounds in 2022. Included in that grisly total are the victims of the 646 mass shootings that took place in 2022. 12/27/2023 04:58 PM

To the editor: It’s been 11 years since 20 precious elementary students and six adults were murdered at Sandy Hook. I remember the tears running down my face as I watched the national news. 12/27/2023 04:58 PM
The gift
The gift
To the editor: Yes, it is almost Christmas and what is the greatest gift you have ever received? Something you treasure and are most thankful for. For me the gift was my parents, Flora and Joe. 12/27/2023 04:58 PM
Great Lakes protection more important than ever
Great Lakes protection more important than ever
“Dan Scripps quietly plays a lead role in Michigan’s energy future from his home office in Northport” began the 12/20 Leelanau Enterprise interview. Michigan Public Service Commission Chairman Scripps is highly regarded both here and in Lansing, which makes his approval of the Enbridge tunnel difficult to understand. Scripps said “..housing that [Line 5] segment within the tunnel would virtually eliminate the risk the current pipelines pose to the Great Lakes” just as Enbridge has been telling us. 12/27/2023 04:58 PM
Looking forward to Year of the Dragon
Looking forward to Year of the Dragon
2024 is the Year of the Dragon, and I expect to act accordingly. Every year, my late grandmother, Ollie Koons, would dress the entire house with the yearly Chinese Zodiac sign as a good omen for the former rambling-gambling woman. 12/27/2023 04:58 PM
Be safe ringing in the New Year
Be safe ringing in the New Year
Sunday we will be closing the book on 2023. As we usher out the old and enter the new year, it’s important that we celebrate responsibly. 12/27/2023 04:58 PM
Conservancy criticism
Conservancy criticism
To the editor: I took a walk today on the new section of bike trail being installed by the Leelanau Conservancy on the east side of Wheeler Rd - right next to NPS land and my home. I was shocked and saddened by the methods they are using bulldozers, switchbacks up the very steepest parts of the hill, and bermed trails around 6 feet wide. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
All I Want for Christmas
All I Want for Christmas
To the editor: All I Want for Christmas from our House of Representatives is preserving voting rights, funding our allies, protecting women’s healthcare and reproductive rights, combatting the climate crisis, tackling immigration reform, expanding healthcare benefits, lowering medication costs, supporting public education, stopping book banning, continuing to build a strong, fair economy, banning the sale of assault weapons, and strengthening our democracy. Unfortunately the Republicanled House is giving our citizens a lump of coal with more chaos and inactivity. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM

Bracing for 2024
To the editor: Since the 2020 election, election clerks and workers have been abused and harassed. Some have found white powder in their mail, including fentanyl. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
STRs can be good neighbors
STRs can be good neighbors
It seems that short-term rentals (STRs) are on peoples’ minds in Leelanau County. Suttons Bay Village recently signed a contract for a third party to monitor STR listings and operate a 24/7 hotline for complaints; Elmwood Township directed its planning commission to use an overlay district or zoning amendments to remove STRs from “Greilickville neighborhoods”; and Suttons Bay and Bingham townships are updating their STR ordinances and introducing “good neighbor” policies. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
Peace on Earth
Peace on Earth
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, everyone into his own city. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
Cease fire imperative
Cease fire imperative
To the editor: Seventy five years ago, on December 10, 1948, the United Nations unanimously passed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was a statement of principles which, sadly, has been poorly upheld. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
