To the editor: One of the encouraging signs in local politics is the progress made by the bipartisan Leelanau County Commission over the past year and a half. We finally have a septic inspection ordinance (like most counties in Michigan), and a Commission seriously interested in solving our problems: affordable housing, attracting and supporting young families, protecting our fragile environment, and transparency and cooperation in government. 12/06/2023 05:33 PM
A little bit of change…
A little bit of change…
To the editor: Reflecting on the recent letters from neighbors opposing the trail building efforts at Palmer Woods, let’s put a few things in perspective. The desire to create multi-use recreational trails was a central driver of the preservation efforts for the land that has become the Palmer Woods Forest Reserve. 12/06/2023 05:33 PM
Biden success
Biden success
To the editor: All of those complaining about Biden’s age and his ability to get the job done, need to pay attention to what he is accomplishing. He has shown us that experience counts when leading this nation and dealing with global matters. 12/06/2023 05:33 PM

‘Aggressive’ Conservancy
To the editor: As long time neighbors of the Leelanau Conservancy’s expanding Palmer Woods mountain bike recreation area, we have felt the impacts of increasing high-speed traffic through our rural neighborhood. We wonder why an organization that says its goal is to protect Leelanau County by being “unrelenting in preserving her beauty and ecological integrity” has become a developer of the Conservancy’s first high-impact recreation area. 12/06/2023 05:33 PM

If you want to be president for four more years and your victory may hinge on your opponent being in the slammer, you’d have to say things are pretty shaky. That’s the harsh reality the Joe Biden for President campaign is staring in the face these days based on the latest Michigan swing state polling data from EPIC-MRA. 12/06/2023 05:33 PM
Washington’s words
Washington’s words
To the editor: Not long after Washington was elected as our first president, the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island, sent him a letter of congratulations. In that letter, the congregation wrote of their hope that the new nation would tolerate religious minorities, like Jews. 12/06/2023 05:33 PM

Corporate greed
To the editor: Americans want financial security for themselves and their loved ones. But the pandemic exposed weaknesses in our supply chains, driving up prices that remain high, pinching our family budgets. 12/06/2023 05:33 PM

Biker adrenaline
To the editor: Is the Palmer Woods Expansion Area an appropriate property tor mountain biking? The conservancy rigorously defends mountain biking, but many, local residents disagree. The Cleveland Township Board ignores their concerns regarding a planned . 12/06/2023 05:33 PM

To the editor: I have been closely following the township meetings and the neighbor’s comments about Palmer Woods Forest Reserve’s new off-road parking area. I am a resident on Wheeler Road where I own three parcels of land. 12/06/2023 05:33 PM
Protect rural character
Protect rural character
To the editor: The application for special use of the land owned by Amoritas Vineyards, to be leased by Under Canvas, a large out-of-state company, is concerning as its approval would set a precedent for future conversion of our agricultural lands. The proposal describes a 75 “room” glamping resort, with additional future needs for housing about 90 employees, which I note are not even detailed in the proposal. 12/06/2023 05:33 PM
Disruptive consequences
Disruptive consequences
To the editor: I live on Wheeler Rd near the existing Palmer Woods staging area. For residents at the north end whose lives are now affected by the expansion, you should know that we’ve been suffering the disruptive consequences of having a national attraction installed in our front yard since its beginning. 12/06/2023 05:33 PM

Celebrating in song:
Kids from all over the county are prepping for their annual holiday music programs. And in coming weeks they will don their best seasonal colors of red, white and green and usher audiences into the holiday with song. 12/06/2023 05:33 PM
