Elmwood postpones new alcohol regs
The Elmwood Township Board postponed reforming the alcohol regulations in the township’s zoning ordinance at their monthly meeting Monday. Instead, officials directed the township planning commission to meet with Traverse City Whiskey Company (TC Whiskey) staff to ensure the new language does not impede the distillery’s development at 9440 S. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM

G-L School seeking $8.1 million bond
Glen Lake has come to a final decision of whether or not they will put a millage on the ballot in November. After months of talks, the Lakers will put the wheels in motion for an $8.175 million campaign (.48 mills over 20 years) to fund infrastructure projects at the school. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM

To the editor: For anyone who’s ever attended a BOC meeting, particular attention should be paid to the ‘Approval of Financials’ section. Each Commissioner, on a rotating basis, makes a motion for disbursement of county funds towards specific items. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM
Interests over ambitions
Interests over ambitions
To the editor: Nikki Haley stated, “The first party to retire its 80-year-old candidate is going to be the party that wins the election.” Interestingly, Trump, now 78, would be 82 by the end of a potential second term. His recent rallies reveal concerning signs: gibberish, slurred speech, confusion about people and facts. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM

To the editor: As a former TART Trails and Leelanau Conservancy board member, I celebrate the connections between human recreation and exploration and responsible well planned access to cherished, conserved places. The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, winding throughout the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore exemplifies this intersection beautifully. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM
‘On True Greatness’
‘On True Greatness’
To the editor: A recent (unsolicited) Trump MAGA mailing got me to thinking, what is greatness? Foremost seems to be “otherness.” Great people don’t have to tell anyone they’re great. Being “great” isn’t a goal in their life. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM

To the editor: Some reasons I am voting for Trump. 1.) I liked two dollar per gallon gasoline, affordable groceries, and lower loan interest rates. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM

The name of Saving Birds Thru Habitat’s president is spelled Mike Berst, not Brest. He and his wife Barbara Richman live in Omena. *** Steve Yoder’s term as Solon Township trustee expires in November. *** An incorrect headline was published last week for a story lauding the fundraising work of the Friends of Lake Leelanau Foundation, which starting in 2025 will be funding the project to eradicate Eurasian water milfoil from the lake. The Friends group has not yet hit its goal of raising $8 million. Fundraising events are continuing toward that goal. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM

To the editor: We are big fans of TART since living near the Leelanau Trail and watching it transform the community around it in a positive way! We now live in Cleveland Township and when using the Heritage Trail, it’s wonderful to see people experiencing the beauty and ecodiversity of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore in such a unique and healthy way! As advocates for people with disabilities, we also love that the SBHT trail provides an accessible and truly immersive way to experience the National Lakeshore for people with mobility challenges. The process of creating this next section has been nothing but respectful of the community- using input from a series of public Cleveland Township meetings held in 2018 to inform the route. 08/14/2024 04:33 PM
