Lakers fall in regional semifinal
Glen Lake baseball lost in heartbreaking fashion against Muskegon Western Michigan Christian 7-0 in an extra-inning thriller on Saturday during a regional final baseball game. The Lakers and WMC was going 1-0 into the top of the seventh, before errors open the floodgates, and within a few minutes, the score raced to 7-0 quickly.

Eagles comeback bid falls short in regional semifinal
A six run comeback in the fifth inning fell short for Lake Leelanau St. Mary (17-11) during a regional semifinal game against Frankfort (21-11) on Monday.

GL’s Houtteman finishes second in state finals
Glen Lake junior Michael Houtteman competed to the best of his abilities at the MHSAA Div. 4 Golf State Championships at Grand Valley state’s Meadow golf Course to finish second overall, only a shot off from winning a state championship.

Cool temperatures don’t deter visitors
One thing you can be sure of in our area is that you can’t be sure of anything as far as the weather is concerned. We’ve had great weather and lousy weather last week, but it didn’t seem to slow down the visitors.

Nominations sought for Omena Village President
You can call us crazy, but here in Omena, we love our local politics. We are pleased to announce that the Omena Historical Society (OHS) is hosting its Sixth Triennial Omena Mayor Race. Qualifying candidates must be animals other than humans, and reside seasonally or full time in the Greater Omena area. Of the six Mayors to-date, five have been canines and one feline. In addition to Mayor Rosie Disch, a yellow lab mix, the Omena Village Council currently includes Vice Mayor Penny Labriola, a chicken, Press Secretary Sandra O’Day Jones, a goat, and ten canine Council members.

Northport’s latest rain garden project wraps up
The latest rain garden project at the corner of Waukazoo and Main Street in the Village of Northport wrapped up construction last week. The project was organized by The Watershed Center — Grand Traverse Bay and funded through an EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) grant.

Northport school BOE adopts 2024-25 budget
The Northport Public School Board of Education (BOE) approved its proposed $6 million general fund budget for the 2024-25 year at its regular meeting/ budget hearing Monday night. The projected budget, which will go into effect on July 1, is based on 13.3880 mills to be levied on the taxable value of nonhomestead and non-qualified agricultural property.

Rick Deering retires after 33 years
After 33 years of driving the school bus at Northport Public School, Rick Deering, 72, is turning in the keys and is ready to retire. Other “work” projects could arise in the future, but for now, Deering wrapped up his last day on June 6, the district’s final day of instruction for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Then you may want to consider working for the Cherry Industry Administrative Board, which is looking for independent contractors to oversee diversions of red tart cherries out of the marketplace. The CIAB is authorized to restrict the size of cherry harvests to meet demand in an effort to increase prices paid to growers.

Farmers markets ramping up
Leelanau Farmers Markets are in full force as the harvesting and tourist season arrives. Glen Arbor welcomed its first farmers market of the season last week along with Leland, Northport, and Empire.
