Spring has sprung; fruit in ‘green tip’
Spring has sprung and so have the daffodils and many of the spring wild flowers. Many of the fruit trees in the area are in “green tip”, which is when the fruit buds have just broken at the tip. It is also when the buds become susceptible to the cold, so cherry and apple farmers hope that there is not another cold snap. When the buds start to open this early, it is always a risk.

Co. Brd. increases salaries for ‘25
The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners voted to increase their yearly salaries by 60% and their per diems by over 70% at their regular session on Tuesday, starting in 2025. This pay increase — their first in two-and-ahalf decades — is intended in part to attract younger people to some soon-tobe- vacant seats on the county board. The salary for county commissioners increased from $5,000 to $8,000 and the salary of the county board chairman increased from $7,700 to $10,000 starting next year. Their per diem pay — fixed payments for attending meetings and conferences — also increased from $40 to $70 for a half day of work and from $70 to $120 for a full day, also starting in 2025.

Hometown hoopster reflects on WNBA
Liz Shimek was not a household name in Chicago when she played two seasons for the Sky. And there was no big WNBA signing bonus waiting for the 18th pick in the 2006 draft, who happened to be a Michigan State forward that led the Spartans to the NCAA women’s finals.

Courage, not bluster
To the editor: An unexpected blessing of the January 6th hearings is that it gave young people two shining examples of political courage, Congresswoman Liz Cheney who co-chaired the Committee and White House Assistant Cassidy Hutchinson (age 27) who testified before it. Both Republicans, they were fully aware of what they could expect from the fury of Trump Republicans, including the onslaught of hate mail and death threats that they were about to receive.

‘Borkovich dedicated’
To the editor: My father is a retired Police officer who often served numerous political officials whether he agreed with them or not. His duty, like Sheriff Borkovich, was always to the people he represented and not to one political party.

‘Never again’
To the editor: I reject the COVID amnesty that some have suggested. Instead, we must never forget the forced mRNA (including children with virtually no risk), job terminations, and neighbor shaming where hostility were variously foisted on citizens who would not accept a largely untested vaccine, or who otherwise had religious objections.

‘Constitutional Sheriff’
To the editor: Leelanau County deserves a better Sheriff. Someone who is focused on law enforcement, not political grandstanding.

‘Dismayed’
To the editor: We were dismayed to see sheriff Mike Borkovich standing next to former President Trump at the rally in Grand Rapids. Leelanau County supported President Joe Biden in the last election.
