Hometown hoopster reflects on WNBA
Liz Shimek was not a household name in Chicago when she played two seasons for the Sky. And there was no big WNBA signing bonus waiting for the 18th pick in the 2006 draft, who happened to be a Michigan State forward that led the Spartans to the NCAA women’s finals. 04/17/2024 05:24 PM

Courage, not bluster
Courage, not bluster
To the editor: An unexpected blessing of the January 6th hearings is that it gave young people two shining examples of political courage, Congresswoman Liz Cheney who co-chaired the Committee and White House Assistant Cassidy Hutchinson (age 27) who testified before it. Both Republicans, they were fully aware of what they could expect from the fury of Trump Republicans, including the onslaught of hate mail and death threats that they were about to receive. 04/10/2024 03:54 PM
‘Borkovich dedicated’
‘Borkovich dedicated’
To the editor: My father is a retired Police officer who often served numerous political officials whether he agreed with them or not. His duty, like Sheriff Borkovich, was always to the people he represented and not to one political party. 04/10/2024 03:54 PM
‘Never again’
‘Never again’
To the editor: I reject the COVID amnesty that some have suggested. Instead, we must never forget the forced mRNA (including children with virtually no risk), job terminations, and neighbor shaming where hostility were variously foisted on citizens who would not accept a largely untested vaccine, or who otherwise had religious objections. 04/10/2024 03:54 PM
‘Constitutional Sheriff’
‘Constitutional Sheriff’
To the editor: Leelanau County deserves a better Sheriff. Someone who is focused on law enforcement, not political grandstanding. 04/10/2024 03:54 PM
‘Dismayed’
‘Dismayed’
To the editor: We were dismayed to see sheriff Mike Borkovich standing next to former President Trump at the rally in Grand Rapids. Leelanau County supported President Joe Biden in the last election. 04/10/2024 03:54 PM
‘Poor judgment’
‘Poor judgment’
To the editor: As an individual, Sheriff Mike Borkovich is welcome to privately support the candidate of his choice. What is unwelcome is that he chose to be photographed in the Leelanau County Sheriff’s uniform publicly showing support for candidate Trump. 04/10/2024 03:54 PM
‘Vacation day?’
‘Vacation day?’
To the editor: I note that Leelanau County’s Sheriff must have taken a vacation day to attend Trump’s liefest in Grand Rapids on Tuesday. Someone should check to be sure he didn’t use a County vehicle to get there and that he DID take a vacation day for his time away from his duties. 04/10/2024 03:54 PM
