To the editor: According to the MDHHS CON Annual Survey, psychiatric emergencies are the second most common reason people present to Acute Care Hospitals across the state (cardiac emergencies are at the top of the list). To the editor: In contrast to the recent letters published in this paper, I applaud the Leelanau Conservancy for their creation of a wonderful trail system! The trails for biking are well designed, minimally impactful on the Forest, and provide a superb outdoor recreational experience. 69 bird species ID’d in count
The Audubon Society’s annual Lake Leelanau Christmas bird count set a new record again this year with an all time high number of bird species, 69, spotted on count day in December. “It was a really good year for Lake Leelanau and Traverse City (area),” said Kirk Waterstripe, who helped organize the count. 01/03/2024 07:41 PM

Marine Corps C-130 pilot Olivia K Raftshol has been promoted to the rank of Major at Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, Texas. Raftshol, 31, is a 2010 graduate of Suttons Bay High School and the daughter of Curt and Barb Raftshol and the late Lynda Raftshol. She is currently assigned to Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 234 and will leave active duty status in June, remaining with 234 as a reservist. ISEA raises $80K for youth programs
Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) announced Monday that they smashed their year-end donation goal of $80,000 to support the growing demands of their various educational programs for youth. First feline Omena mayor passes
Sweet Tart McKee, a Norwegian Forest cat and the former Mayor of Omena from 2018 – 2021, died on Christmas Eve. She was the fifth Mayor of Omena, the first feline after four dogs, and the first to become an international sensation. Following her election, she received emails and letters from around the world, and appeared on websites in many countries, with the news of her election translated into quite a few languages. Point Broadband’s initiative to bring high-speed internet to “unserved” and “underserved” homes in Leelanau County may not be completed until the end of this year, according to the latest projections by the Opelika, Alabama-based internet service provider.
