After we stuff ourselves with the finest turkey and stuffing, Friday and Saturday will bring out the holiday spirit in all of us, along with the best Leelanau deals of 2024. A pajama party will be breaking in the consumer holiday with a “bed parade” from 9 to 9:30 a.m.

Segment 9 discussion comes to a halt
The debate of the final 4.2-mile “Segment 9” of the Sleeping Bear Dunes Heritage Trail within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (SBDNL) came to a screeching halt last week in Empire after SBDNL Superintendent Scott Tucker paused the project following consultations with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB).

With the annual Leelanau Enterprise snowfall contest deadline now closed, Michiganders now await for the most important weather factor in determining their guesses: snowfall. And according to staff at the National Weather Service Gaylord, snow could be well on its way as soon as mid next week.

3 selected for second interview
Leelanau County government may be overseen by a new administrator very soon. Three candidates for the position – Jim Dyer, Kipling Belcher, and Mark Brown – have been invited back for follow ups after clearing their first round of interviews Monday and Tuesday.

Election results certified by canvassers
The Leelanau County Board of Canvassers certified the Nov. 5 general election results Saturday afternoon. The Statement of Votes Cast sent to Lansing differed from the unofficial results reported the morning after Election Day, with many more votes included.

Registration set for ‘Swim the Bay’

Fish grinder station buy OK’d
The Elmwood Township board approved the purchase of a new fish grinder station for the township marina at its November regular meeting. Although the cost of ordering and installing the station might be as high as $110,000, Harbormaster Dan Jenuwine said that the investment will ultimately pay off for the township.

‘Tis the season! Saturday, Nov. 30 is the Northport Tree Lighting, with a full day of activities leading up to it. The Leelanau Township Library in Northport has children’s activities that day including crafts, writing letters to Santa, cookies (eating cookies is an activity in my book), and more!

Student earns MSU scholarship
Henry Sutherland, an 8th grader in Leelanau County, has been awarded a $2,000 Michigan State University Pre- College Scholarship. Students in 8th to 11th grades for 2024-25 who attended an MSU summer pre-college program in the summer of 2024 were eligible to apply for this award.
