To the editor: The letters written to the editor in the Jan. 11 edition show a reliance on biased media for information regarding January 6. 01/17/2024 04:38 PM
‘Guardrails’ not to be trusted
‘Guardrails’ not to be trusted
To the editor: In his 12/28/23 letter to the editor, David Edelstein utilizes his observation that “guardrails” have been applied to free speech as justification for limits that should also be applied to our right to bear arms. I appreciate his comparison, which undermines his point. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
Respect … civility
Respect … civility
To the editor: These past few years have revealed turmoil in our county government in terms of direction and management. This past week, an outside consultant hired by the Board of Commissioners reported on his findings after talking with / hearing from 75% of the employees. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM

Stable democracy threatened
Stable democracy threatened
To the editor: A new political party, No Labels, has emerged and has the potential to be a spoiler in the 2024 Presidential election. Their stratagem is a divisive and hazardous gambit jeopardizing America’s future. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
Shining light on January 6
Shining light on January 6
To the editor: For Christians, January 6th marks The Epiphany, when light pierced darkness revealing the Christ Child to the Gentiles. Every four years, our democracy shines its light through the peaceful transition of power. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM

To the editor: Easy answers to complex problems invite unintended, often dangerous unforeseen consequences. Simple solutions are inappropriate for most social issues, which are complex, often ambiguous, and require nuanced consideration. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM

Charter retires, offers thanks
To the editor: A few members and supporters of Saving Birds Thru Habitat already know that I have retired from my position as Executive Director. As I make my announcement more broadly, I want to thank all of you who have provided generous financial support, office assistance and efforts for projects on the grounds. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
Adhere to ‘transparency’ policy
Adhere to ‘transparency’ policy
To the editor: In the 2016 fundraising for the original 700 acre Palmer Woods project, the Leelanau Conservancy communicated to prospective donors that the land would be used for cross-country skiing, hiking, and passive recreation. No reference was made to mountain bike trails, and mountain bike trails are certainly not “passive recreation.” Nevertheless, in the 2019 fundraising for the 350-acre addition to Palmer Woods the Conservancy accepted funds from a major donor in return for agreeing to construct mountain bike trails on the entire 1,050 acre “park.” It is now clear that some of those who donated to the original project would not have donated had they known that mountain bike trails would later be constructed on that property — certainly the numerous neighbors who are upset about the mountain bike trails, and undoubtedly others who consider these trails as a departure from the Conservancy’s stated mission of “Conserving the Land, Water and Scenic Character of Leelanau County.” The Conservancy’s Transparency Policy, published on their website, states that “we place a high value on transparency and honoring donor intent”. 01/03/2024 07:41 PM
Caring, charitable community
Caring, charitable community
To the editor: Growing up in a city back east, I often heard stories of the kindness and generosity of rural America. And when I moved to the area 25 years ago, I began to experience it. 01/03/2024 07:41 PM
Hope for 2024
Hope for 2024
To the editor: Looking ahead to 2024, I am hopeful that as a community we will open our hearts and minds to see our neighbors through eyes rooted in kindness. As we face uncertainty in our world, we are our best as members of society when we look and act with kindness toward our brothers and sisters, particularly those who are struggling. 01/03/2024 07:41 PM
