All I Want for Christmas
All I Want for Christmas
To the editor: All I Want for Christmas from our House of Representatives is preserving voting rights, funding our allies, protecting women’s healthcare and reproductive rights, combatting the climate crisis, tackling immigration reform, expanding healthcare benefits, lowering medication costs, supporting public education, stopping book banning, continuing to build a strong, fair economy, banning the sale of assault weapons, and strengthening our democracy. Unfortunately the Republicanled House is giving our citizens a lump of coal with more chaos and inactivity. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
Bracing for 2024
Bracing for 2024
To the editor: Since the 2020 election, election clerks and workers have been abused and harassed. Some have found white powder in their mail, including fentanyl. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
Cease fire imperative
Cease fire imperative
To the editor: Seventy five years ago, on December 10, 1948, the United Nations unanimously passed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was a statement of principles which, sadly, has been poorly upheld. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
Consequence of war
Consequence of war
To the editor: A reader had submitted in last’s week’s paper an article highlighting the accomplishments Biden has made during his time in office. Especially how he has handled the war in Israel. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
Drugs and addiction
Drugs and addiction
To the editor: We watch what addictive substance is doing to people, from vaping to experimentation with many street drugs that are euphoriants producing a fleeting euphoria armed with addiction. Counseling in prison and county jails, the ugly side of addiction with tragic outcomes is continuous, some seek help and get free of addiction. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
Explanation sought
Explanation sought
To the editor: I call on our county Prosecutor Hubbell and Judge Hamlyn to offer a written explanation as to why they decided as they did, concerning the tragic loss of Evelyn Kellogg. Arriving at drunk driving causing injury is a far cry from the reality of death, wouldn’t you agree? Bradley Price Northport. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
‘A magical place’
‘A magical place’
To the editor: Thank you Leelanau County. With the support of you and Toys for Tots of Northern Michigan, we brightened Christmas for over 150 Leelanau County families, more than 460 individuals. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
Pull up the ladder
Pull up the ladder
To the editor: Reading this past year about the campgrounds proposed — and turned down —-in Leelanau County reminds me of a recent summer vacation. My wife and I rented a condo in Frankfort, and spent one of our days driving, shopping, and hiking Leelanau County. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
Popular Vote Compact
Popular Vote Compact
To the editor: Do you wonder why legislation supported by a majority of citizens doesn’t become law? Recent examples of proposed legislation that was supported by a majority of citizens but did not pass, include the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act (69% public support), and Dream Act (72% of likely voters supported). 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
Teflon worn thin
Teflon worn thin
To the editor: Do you remember the Maffia mob boss John Gotti — the so called “Teflon John” because he was indicted and tried in three different consecutive trials on felony charges of five murders, obstruction of justice, extortion and racketeering and found guilty. Gotti avoided consequences for his crimes but never once claimed he was being “picked on” or was the object of someone’s animus. 12/20/2023 09:57 PM
Thank you
Thank you
To the editor: The 2023 Lights, Bites, and Books Gala at the Suttons Bay Bingham District Library is now in the history books. Many thanks to the attendees and donors of items for the silent auction and all the volunteers who worked many hours to make this event happen. 12/13/2023 05:43 PM
Board dysfunction
Board dysfunction
To the editor: I am appalled to read about a costly FOIA request from Commissioner Lautner to obtain information that Commissioner Ross refuses to share. First of all, why does an elected county commissioner even need to request a FOIA to obtain official information required to perform her oversight duties? The real issue is dysfunction on the board of commissioners. 12/13/2023 05:43 PM
