This past weekend was a glorious one in Northport on all counts — the weather, the events, and the community spirit. Leelanau UnCaged on Saturday and the Northport Tea Dance on Sunday were huge successes, providing fun and entertainment for local residents and drawing many visitors into Northport. It is estimated that over 9,000 people came to UnCaged this year. In 1997 I wrote, I look forward to writing the Glen Lake news and hope everyone will contribute. Please call or fax me with any stories or news of visiting people coming and going or even people that are ill and would like a card or call. Remember that without contributors we have no news. Some of the news at that time was congratulating women’s club on a great job with their smorgasbord, unfortunately can’t do that anymore, we miss it. The winter of 2019-20 could be a tough one for the shanties in Fishtown. Amanda Holmes, executive director of the Fishtown Preservation Society, said Tuesday that the society had reached one of its fundraising milestones at the end of August when it raised $320,000 making it eligible to receive a $160,000 grant from the Jeffris Family Foundation of Janesville, Wisconsin. “We succeeded with that at the end of August,” she said. “That grant may only be used toward work on the shanties.” *** Though the community in Northport and Leelanau Township still appears split over how to pay the shared shortfall on its municipal sewer bond to Leelanau County, information on the issue is becoming clearer.
