Northport students return from space center trip
Five Northport middle school students had the opportunity to travel to Florida’s Kennedy Space Center in August, taking away invaluable experiences and knowledge in the process. The six member Northport team called the “Lunar Leapers,” was made up of students from both seventh and eighth grades: Lilly Gmoser-Duhamel, Lele Raphael, Alayah Jones, Jace Kohler, Elsie Purdy Teahen, and Jack Scripps. 09/12/2024 06:28 AM

Leelanau Montessori Forever Foundation (LMFF) will host its 9th annual Vineyard at Sunset 5K and a half-mile mile Fun Run, Sunday, September 15 at the beautiful French Valley Vineyard. This continues a series adapted from the book, “A Port Oneida Collection,” Volume 1 of the twopart set, “Oral History, Photographs, and Maps from the Sleeping Bear Region,” produced by Tom Van Zoeren in partnership with Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear. Here we continue with a look at the old Fred & Ellen Miller Farm, just north of the Thoreson Farm at the north end of Thoreson Road, focused here on Ellen Miller, innkeeper of the Manitou View Inn built there by her husband Fred: The Millers’ next-door neighbors, the Watkins family, were “summer people” from Chicago. They remembered Mrs. Miller “like a third grandmother. She gave us cake and flowers. She had us over for dinner; she prepared beautiful dinners. To us she was just this lovely grandmother.” Mary Watkins Crane recalls, “Mrs. Miller had a wood stove. It was amazing that she could produce all those wonderful meals without a six-burner range and two ovens. I remember lots of wood going in but I have no idea where it came from. An amazing woman, Ellen Olsen Miller seemed to be able to do everything. Her house was always spotless as was she herself. I never saw her in a dirty apron. There was no sand on her floors despite all those guests marching through. Sheets and towels appeared on the line. White throw rugs looked like they had just been put down. And always, always, Mrs. Miller seemed to be in a clean dress and smell like soap.” 09/12/2024 06:28 AM

The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners is considering filing a complaint with the Michigan Attorney General to identify and prosecute individuals who may have violated state laws by blocking state and county roadways without proper authority during a bicycle race on Aug. 25 as part of an Ironman 70.3 event. At its regular monthly executive meeting Tuesday morning, the county board agreed in a 7-0 vote to seek a legal review of a draft resolution the board may adopt next Tuesday evening calling for prosecution of “those who authorized or performed the closure” of state and local rights-of way affecting Leelanau County during the Ironman event. *** Fourth-generation farmer Alan Skeba would rather look at cherry trees from his porch, but he grew tired of losing money to produce a crop that not enough people wanted. “Those days were tough,” said Skeba, reflecting on a decision made in the spring to pull 28 acres of tart and sweet cherries from land his grandfather bought in 1914. “And even through cherry harvest I had a tough time going up there because that’s all I’ve done. 09/12/2024 06:28 AM
