Fire millage requests in 4 townships approved
Fire millage requests on the ballot in four townships, Centerville, Cleveland, Kasson, and Solon, were approved Tuesday night as more than 9,000 voters made their way to the polls to show overwhelming support for continued services. All townships are members of Cedar Area Fire and Rescue (CAFR), each determining the method of fiscally supporting the four-township department. 08/08/2024 06:09 AM
More antennas soon on county tower
More antennas soon on county tower
The just-built communications tower at the county government center remains devoid of antennas, but emergency management director Matt Ansorge expects that to change. The county built the tower, the second at the government center, with intention to lease a portion of the structure to Verizon. 08/08/2024 06:09 AM

Situational denial can make matters worse
The word “denial” is not a river in Egypt, but it is a handydandy human coping skill to avoid unpleasant events in our collective lives. Unfortunately avoiding a harsh reality can make matters worse the longer you wait to confront it. 08/08/2024 06:09 AM
Only in Leelanau
Only in Leelanau
Last Wednesday I stopped at my favorite roadside vegetable/ fruit stand on Overlook Rd and M22 for sweet corn, squash and late harvest sweet cherries. I made my purchase, loaded my items into my car and drove to myNorthporthome. Anhour later the doorbell rang. Standing at my door was the owner of that stand. I had left my billfold on the table. He was bringing it home to me, fully in tact, before I even knew it was missing! Thank you for your thoughtfulness and your wonderful produce. Suzanne Landes Northport 08/08/2024 06:09 AM

Where has civility gone?
Where has civility gone?
While seating with my 8 yeqr old granddaughter on on the patio of our home on Lake Leelanau, she wondered what the flag attached to a bright yellow speed boat said. The boat was motoring from the south end of the lake due north and the flag read “F... Biden”. 08/08/2024 06:09 AM
Fly In/Drive In pancakes a hit
Fly In/Drive In pancakes a hit
I want to thank and compliment the Northport Lions Club on the terrific Fly In/Drive In Pancake Breakfast that was held today (first Saturday in August) at Woolsey Airport north of Northport. There was a great crowd, many vintage cars and lots of planes of all kinds. Every person in attendance seemed to have a smile on their face and there were many pilots who expressed that Woolsey Airport is their favorite airport in Michigan. The runways are well maintained by Leelanau Township and there is no more iconic airport terminal than the stone building that was built as a creamery and now serves as the terminal. The SWAT! (Save Woolsey Airport Terminal) group had an information table where visitors could learn the history of the airport and the man it honors. Donations were also being accepted toward the repairs that are desperately needed to keep the terminal standing. If you haven’t had a chance to donate to save the terminal, donations are being accepted by the Leelanau Township Community Foundation SWAT fund. They are a 501(c)(3). 08/08/2024 06:09 AM

Thank you volunteers, the Northport Community Band, pilots, car buffs, Northport EMS and a very giving community. The annual Northport Lions Club Breakfast Fly-In, held at Woolsey Airport Saturday, was by all measurement a great fund-raising event. 08/08/2024 06:09 AM
Leadership needed
Leadership needed
Leland Township has tackled some persistent issues in recent years — a permanent township office, a sustainable operating budget — but hard work remains. A library seawall and DNR park that preserve public docking; Hancock and Grove park improvements that align with residents’ interests; a comprehensive, cost-effective road repair plan. 08/08/2024 06:09 AM
Grant prevails in register of deed vote
Grant prevails in register of deed vote
Outside of the Republican nominations for the District 1, 2, and 7 commissioner seats, there was just one contested countylevel position on the Aug. 6 primary election ballot: the register of deeds. Incumbent Register of Deeds Jennifer Grant faced Leland Township resident Renée Wyler for the Republican candidacy. 08/08/2024 06:09 AM
