Solar energy proposal garners controversy
The Leelanau County government center was subject to heated debate once again on Feb. 20. This time, the county commissioners were divided over a proposed grant application that would grant the county over $1.5 million to build out solar arrays on the center’s Suttons Bay campus, which is projected to save the county between $883,000 and $1.2 million in energy bills over 25 years. 02/28/2024 04:44 PM

To the editor: While we were pleased the Enterprise called for releasing the raw data from the recent cultural survey, we were disappointed that our paper of record doesn’t seem interested in investigating why Commissioner Kama Ross exchanged 1,250 emails with county employees about the survey. What could such a volume of communication be for? Thank you — Melinda Lautner — for your courage in demanding answers through a Freedom of Information Act request. 02/21/2024 04:57 PM
Winter festivals, activities brings communities together
Winter festivals, activities brings communities together
If there’s one thing northern Michiganders know how to do best, it’s how to have fun and bring the community together in the middle of winter. This President’s Day weekend in Leelanau County was evidence of just that, with families, friends, and local small businesses getting outside to celebrate in popular annual events like the Yeti Fest in Suttons Bay and Winterfest Chili Cook-Off/Perch Fishing Contest in Glen Arbor. 02/21/2024 04:57 PM

No snow woes; ice fishing non-exsistent
Winter has provided more cross country skiing than ice fishing opportunities, which doesn’t say much. “During the 10 days of winter, we groomed about every other day, and it was great,” said Kerry Kelly, chairman of the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes organization that maintains the Heritage Trail through volunteers. 02/21/2024 04:57 PM

Cooperation sought for bovine tuberculosis infected deer
It seems unlikely that hunting in Leelanau will be directly affected by the discovery of a bovine tuberculosis-infected deer in southwest Benzie County. But Emily Sewell, who leads the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) response team to the discovery of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in the wild deer herd, said cooperation from hunters will be sought to help identify and control the disease. 02/21/2024 04:57 PM
