People can learn about nature and the conservation efforts being made in the region from the comfort of their own homes this winter thanks to a webinar series free and open to the public. The village of Empire has begun identifying potential locations to complete site plans on up to three potential locations for a new “village office and community space.” The Village of Empire has known the need of a new village office, but things have been heating up since last March. Deer harvest down nearly 11% from ‘22
The deer harvest appears headed for an off year in Leelanau County and the state, with the worst outcome coming from the Upper Peninsula. According to figures provided since the MDNR instituted a mandatory deer-kill reporting program in 2022, the harvest is down nearly 11% in Leelanau County from a year ago with only a few days left in deer seasons that run from September through December. 12/27/2023 04:58 PM

Researchers develop tool to fight lamprey
A recently discovered chemical compound that makes it diffi cult for invasive sea lamprey to find their breeding grounds may be a new tool for controlling a parasite that threatens Great Lakes fish. Anne Scott, an assistant professor of fisheries and wildlife at Michigan State University, and her research team are creating a new method of sea lamprey control using a newly discovered chemical compound, petromyzonol tetrasolfate — also known as 3sPZS. 12/27/2023 04:58 PM

Moon suffers heart attack, returns to Elmwood marina
Elmwood Township’s harbormaster, Pete Moon, is settling down after a busy season, both personally and professionally. He kept up with his duties this summer despite heart attacks putting him in the hospital on two separate occasions. Generations welcome Santa in Omena
Santa was in Omena on Christmas Eve and it was a wonderful, multi-generational affair. Over 30 adults and almost 20 children awaited Santa’s arrival on the fire truck. There were five families with three generations at the gathering. Two families, the Wheelers and the DelaFuentes, tied for most attendees this year, with twelve each. They both had seven adults and five children with them. Martha DelaFuente was there with her daughters and sons-in-law and all five of her grandchildren. 12/27/2023 04:58 PM
