Elements of democracy
To the editor: Democracy is a topic of much discussion in our daily conversations, one result of our political turmoil. Withmanyamong us sharing thoughts on the importance of and elements of democracy, it’s fitting for the Smithsonian (April/May 2024) to reveal the connection of and importance of the library to colonial education and ultimately to the support and understanding of democracy.

Yes to Parenting Communities
To the editor: Parenting Communities of Leelanau County (PCLC) support new parents who are often far removed from their own families. Without help, inevitable parenting challenges can raise fears of inadequacy.

Stand Up
To the editor: A 16-year old North Carolina student was recently suspended for asking whether the term “alien” in a school assignment related to “illegal aliens without green cards.” Administrators considered that racist. Since when did posing ANY question in school (or in our country!) become grounds for punishment? Are we all to be penalized now for asking certain questions? George Orwell’s book, “1984,” warned of the concept that “freedom is slavery.” Mao, the Soviet Union, and Pol Pot perfected that idea, and examples in America are increasingly common.

Thank you
To the editor: Thank you to all who came out to the Contra Dance event at the Glen Arbor Township Hall on Saturday for a well-attended, extremely fun time! Thanks, especially, to Vicki Berglund, for her mad organizational skills, and to Woodland Celtic and Pat, for the great live music, calling, and instruction. Let’s do this again! Terri Myers Glen Arbor.

Workforce housing needed
To the editor: Sorry to hear Northport still has not seriously considered utilizing its 7th Street property as a site for work-force housing. Twenty homes, possibly more could be situated on the land which is 6% unbuildable.

Survey Value?
To the editor: “The Cultural Survey” that was conducted in December 2023 has revealed what? All that we know is what Mr. John Scholten, who conducted “The Survey”, has told us.

Chamberlain wannabee
To the editor: Our Federal Representative Jack Bergman appears to many of his constituents to be appeasing Russia’s objectives in the Ukraine by voting against the Ukraine aid package. I hope the voters of the First Michigan Congressional District will remember this in November.

Waste not
To the editor: “What if the climate change problems like plastic pollution, energy crisis, and environmental doom are symptoms of one malady, and it’s something we actually can fix? Correct, the planet is fighting one arch-villain: Waste.” Americans live in the most wasteful civilization in history. It’s beyond what we haul to the curb.

Stop the insanity
To the editor: “What government have you given us, Mr Franklin,” asked the lady. “A Republic, madam, if you can keep it.” This November 5 don’t be a hitchhiker on the road to socialism.

Bergman opposed Ukraine aid
To the editor: Once again, Rep. Jack Bergman has allied himself with the far-right fringe of the Republican Party — Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Elise Stefanik, among others — this time opposing aid to Ukraine, and thereby providing support to Putin.

No vote on immigration
To the editor: If the sheriff really wants to see the problems at the border addressed, I suggest he urge the MAGA Republicans in the House to bring the immigration bill already negotiated by both Republicans and Democrats in the Senate to a vote. The bill contains most of what the MAGAs want, and Biden has pledged to sign it.

Building community
To the editor: An opportunity in Leelanau County lies ahead with the August primary. We will be able to support funding for early childhood, senior services, a road millage along with selecting our public servants for the years ahead.
