Louis A. Smith
Louis A. Smith, 85, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2024. A traditional Irish Wake will be held for friends and family at Sleders Family Tavern on September 6, 2024 from 5 to 8 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 1 p.m. at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire. The Rosary will be prayed at 12:30 pm. A full obituary will be published in the next edition of the Enterprise. Kelly’s case in Elmwood dismissed
Elmwood Township prevailed in court against former township Supervisor Jack Kelly Monday. Thirteenth Circuit Court Judge Charles Hamlyn ruled in favor of the township and decided there was no legal basis for Kelly’s allegation that the township board violated the Michigan Open Meetings Act (OMA) at their Feb.

School back in session
It’s nearly here: a new start for county students and teachers as Glen Lake, Leland, Suttons Bay, Northport, Lake Leelanau St. Mary, and Leelanau School open their doors and crank up the air conditioning for the 2024-25 school year, which begins on Tuesday.

Jen Stephens and her dog Kash competed at the Ultimate Air Dogs competition at the Cedar Polka Fest on Saturday and Sunday. Kash had a jump of 19 feet 10 inches in the final.

Board flip-flop
To the editor: How interesting to read in the Enterprise ( Cleveland Addresses Segment 9) that Jan Nowak, along with Tim Stein and Angie Diotte, have flip flopped on their support of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail route extension. It was, after all, Jan’s motion to support a resolution at the September 10, 2019 Cleveland Township Board meeting in favor of the proposed route.

Leash your dog!
To the editor: I love dogs, but I am terrified of off leash dogs. I have an older “rescue” dog that is highly reactive to other dogs, and we love going on hikes on public trails.

Coverage appreciated
To the editor: I was happy to see the featured coverage of the TART trail extension through Cleveland Township. I am hopeful that continued thought is put into redirecting the project in order to protect the natural landscape for residents and visitors.
