Village manager gets raise
Suttons Bay Village approved a five-year employment agreement with Village Manager Rob Larrea last week. The contract pushes Larrea’s annual salary into six figures, from $88,000 to $115,000. Larrea’s previous contract with the village was set to expire Dec. 31. 08/28/2024 10:35 PM

Farmstay public hearing set for Sept. 12
The Leelanau Township planning commission (PC) is one step closer to making a decision on farmstay campsites in the agriculture zoning district. OAB to purchase waterfront:
The Old Art Building (OAB) in Leland finalized the purchase of riverfront property adjacent to its facilities on July 31, reaching its first milestone to extend its campus with 280 feet of shoreline on the Leland River as well as adding signifi cant green space. GTB powwow celebrates culture
The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB) held its annual Kchi Wiikwedong Anishinaabek Maawnjidowin Contest Powwow this weekend in Peshawbestown. With over $36,000 in dance contest prize money, attendees had the opportunity to watch dancers in various age groups compete in categories like men’s and women’s fancy, woodland, sidestep, and more. In addition to the dance competition, there was also a singing contest that drum groups were able to participate in. The host drum this year was “The Boyz,” who hailed from Minneapolis, Minnesota. 08/21/2024 09:15 PM

Manitou dock woes continue
North Manitou Island is home to a million-dollar, unappreciated dock. That’s because ferry service to the island, which is owned by the National Park Service, has been suspended even after an expensive dock extension was constructed earlier this summer to accommodate the ferry boat Mishe-Mokwa. 08/21/2024 09:15 PM

Sweet treat for vols/Neighbors
Leelanau Christian Neighbors (LCN) treated its volunteers and Neighbors Monday to a sweet surprise with a visit from Buchan’s Scoops 22 Ice Cream Truck. From 2 to 6 p.m., volunteers and community members waiting for services from LCN’s food pantry, baby pantry, and financial assistance programs enjoyed a variety of delicious ice cream flavors served in cones and dishes. 08/21/2024 09:15 PM

Donatelli Jr. wins yacht race
The Leland Yacht Club hosted the 80th Championship regatta of the National One-Design class August 15-17, holding 10 races despite threatening weather. Guy Joseph Donatelli, Jr., of Akron, Ohio, emerged as a first-time champion, with his father, Guy Donatelli (a previous winner) as crew. Local sailor Biff Steel took second, with Margo Erme of Akron as crew, while Sara Makielski came in third, with her crew, Jack and James Brugeman, also recognized for the Junior Sailor award. Carol Carlton and Margo Erme shared the Don and Marilyn Pendergast award for female sailors, in recognition of their many years of crewing with various skippers. The Race Committee ably set the course and managed the races under Guy Brossy’s leadership. 08/21/2024 09:15 PM
