During Native American fall harvest, plant-based recipes take center stage
During Native American fall harvest, plant-based recipes take center stage
I was heartened to read the news of President Biden’s apology for the government’s 150 years of moving Native American children into boarding schools. This comes as many Americans prepare for Thanksgiving in November, which is also Native American Heritage Month. The timing of these two commemorations comes with more than a bit of irony given that a traditional Thanksgiving celebrates a coming together of early European immigrants with Native Americans, the result of which was the tragic loss of Indigenous tribes and the colonization of Native American land and communities. 11/20/2024 04:34 PM

The curse of the governor’s seat
Homeostasis and Michigan voters. The two go together. 11/20/2024 04:34 PM
Kudos to election workers
Kudos to election workers
To the editor: After working in Centerville Township precinct during both our primary and general elections this year, I wanted to commend our County and Township officials during a challenging year. No voting system is perfect, no technology is perfect, and thankfully there are several layers of checks and balances. 11/13/2024 05:42 PM

Make America healthy
To the editor: I just read an article from the Wall Street Journal authored by RFKJr., 9/5/24. Headlined “Make America Healthy Again.” He illuminates the chronic disease crisis (CDC), gripping the USA. 11/13/2024 05:42 PM

Slicing and dicing election results
The historic election of last week has been sliced and diced in so many ways that there is hardly anything new to digest but here’s an angle that is often ignored. Our behavior in elections gives us a rare opportunity to learn something about ourselves individually and collectively and here in Michigan there were a wealth of “reveals” about our human behavior and conduct. 11/13/2024 05:42 PM
Congratulations
Congratulations
To the editor: The voters of Leelanau Township have spoken and elected Silvia Gans and Elizabeth Schwind as Township Trustees. Congratulations to both on their clear victory and I wish them success in keeping Leelanau Township a beautiful place in which to live and work. 11/13/2024 05:42 PM
Thank you
Thank you
To the editor: Can you imagine what would have happened with folks around here still denying the results of the 2020 election if this vote-flip had gone the other way? Thank you to the candidates who took this gut-wrenching news like grownups. And thank you to Michelle Crocker, who has lived through her worst nightmare this past week. 11/13/2024 05:42 PM

The enduring love of Luna
As difficult as it is to talk about, I find it equally as sweet and comforting to write about my beloved Luna. She passed away on Oct. 11/13/2024 05:42 PM
Voting error chalked up to human error
Voting error chalked up to human error
One week out from the general election gives us a little perspective on results which turned out to be much different than reported on election night. Unofficial results posted late Tuesday, early Wednesday indicated that six of the seven county commissioner seats were won by Democrats. 11/13/2024 05:42 PM

Buttigieg gets high marks for transportation work
You can’t count the times that some career politician, which the good government crowd believes is not a dirty word, has sat in that TV interview chair and at some pointed lamented about the personal family sacrifi ces one has to make to meet the all-time-consuming assignment of serving the public good and your loved-ones, too. 11/06/2024 09:18 PM
‘Grudge match’ questioned
‘Grudge match’ questioned
To the editor: We are writing in response to the recent article by Brian Freiberger regarding the presidential race in Empire. We were both insulted by the description of our campaign as a “grudge match.” Such language implies discord and animosity, which could not be further from the truth. 11/06/2024 09:18 PM
Speed limits needed
Speed limits needed
To the editor: For many years, the residents around the Glen Lakes have requested that speed limits be reduced for the safety of walkers, bikers, and drivers. With the passage of a new bill by Governor Whitmer, townships are now allowed to set those limits. 11/06/2024 09:18 PM
