Experience and competency
Experience and competency
To the editor: As three former and the current Township Supervisors we’re asking you to support Jolisa Ugalde for Leelanau Township Treasurer. Why? Our current Treasurer, after 28 years of service, is retiring. 07/17/2024 05:06 PM
STRs problematic
STRs problematic
To the editor: For 5.5 years, Elmwood Township elected officials have buried their heads in the sand. When STRs were determined to be a forbidden use in March 2019 and citizens filed zoning complaints, instead of enforcing our zoning ordinance, Township officials, without ANY advance public notice, instead adopted an Enforcement Moratorium that lasted 2+ years. 07/17/2024 05:06 PM

‘Needed community resource’
To the editor: Parenting Communities is such a gift to our county. It provides essential learning opportunities for little developing brains and bodies and support and resources for families to help their children grow and get ready for more formal schooling. 07/17/2024 05:06 PM
Test of unity
Test of unity
To the editor: Both President Biden and Former President Trump have called for UNITY post the assassination attempt on Candidate for President Trump’s life. It seems certain publications are already trying to modify the serious of the failed assassination attempt and its aftermath. 07/17/2024 05:06 PM
Renew millage
Renew millage
To the editor: Ninety percent of brain development happens in the first five years of life, when children’s parents are their first teachers. I am proud to live in a county that supports early childhood education through the Early Childhood Millage. 07/17/2024 05:06 PM
Harris ‘inept’
Harris ‘inept’
To the editor: Democrats have finally admitted, the emperor has no clothes, and as such, many are advocating to replace President Joe Biden’s with Vice President Kamala Harris. Only politician less intelligible than Joe Biden, is Kamala Harris. 07/17/2024 05:06 PM
Why support renewal of the Early Childhood Millage?
Why support renewal of the Early Childhood Millage?
When they first approved an Early Childhood millage, local voters were acknowledging the fact that parents of young children often need more or different support than what they can get from their extended family, friendship groups, or church. Prior to that millage, Leelanau families had been able to seek such help from an informal network of service providers, including churches and nonprofits. But the county itself offered only basic health services for families with young children, and the limited services available through the informal network were always facing an uncertain funding future. 07/17/2024 05:06 PM
A plea for government transparency
A plea for government transparency
The Energy Futures Task Force (EFTF), created ten months ago, has acted in a rogue manner, and the County Board is refusing to take measures to ensure better behavior in the future According to County Board minutes, the task force was instructed that “there will be meeting minutes and postings for meetings that will need to take place.” 07/17/2024 05:06 PM

To the editor: Why renew the Early Childhood millage on 8/6? Lilian Katz, professor emerita, Early Childhood Education, University of Illinois, says it best: “We must recognize that the welfare of our children and grandchildren is intimately linked to the welfare of other people’s children. When one of our children needs lifesaving surgery, someone else’s child will perform it. 07/17/2024 05:06 PM

To the editor: The look of the “Newbird” (Bluebird) building is a shock. It is totally at odds with the character of the community and the quality of life in Leland. 07/17/2024 05:06 PM

To the editor: VOTE YES on the Early Childhood Millage on the August ballot. This groundbreaking initiative is parent-led and informed by the science of learning. 07/17/2024 05:06 PM
Support for Ugalde
Support for Ugalde
To the editor: Dear Leelanau Township voters: The position of Leelanau Township Treasurer is a position that requires competence. Jolisa Ugalde has been in the position of Deputy Treasurer and has been trained to do the job that she will assume as Treasurer. 07/17/2024 05:06 PM
