Respect … civility
To the editor: These past few years have revealed turmoil in our county government in terms of direction and management. This past week, an outside consultant hired by the Board of Commissioners reported on his findings after talking with / hearing from 75% of the employees.

New hope for assault weapon ban?
Efforts to ban assault weapons may have taken a turn for the better with the departure of the chief NRA opponent who successfully fought the ban for years but has now quietly resigned as the head of the progun lobby. Wayne LaPierre is charged with living high on the hog and allegedly using NRA funds to do it. With him out of the loop, what’s next on this gun battle?

‘Guardrails’ not to be trusted
To the editor: In his 12/28/23 letter to the editor, David Edelstein utilizes his observation that “guardrails” have been applied to free speech as justification for limits that should also be applied to our right to bear arms. I appreciate his comparison, which undermines his point.

Billions in foreign aid
To the editor: I have been pondering something for days. There are some mysteries in this country that continue to go unexplained, or we’re given an explanation that makes little or no sense to a common, critical thinking, middle class American like myself.

Survey results demand action
We were disheartened by the findings of an employee survey on the work culture within the county building released last week. Michigan Leadership Institute (MLI) regional president John Scholten presented the findings of a survey in which 85 of the county’s 117 employees responded.

Applause for Conservancy
To the editor: In contrast to the recent letters published in this paper, I applaud the Leelanau Conservancy for their creation of a wonderful trail system! The trails for biking are well designed, minimally impactful on the Forest, and provide a superb outdoor recreational experience. The trails are not very wide and therefore, they are one way only.

Greater Good is important
To the editor: One of the fundamental principles in a democracy is making decisions based on the Common Good. The FOIA issue currently facing the entire Leelanau County government is a solid case of actions which threaten this greater good.

Committed to EMT/Fire Services
To the editor: After a series of public meetings and some on-line misinformation we wanted to confirm our commitment to EMT/Fire services while maintaining our fiduciary responsibilities to our taxpayers. In September we negotiated a three-year agreement with our EMT/Fire services, lifting their compensation from last in the County to toptier.

Mental health concerns
To the editor: According to the MDHHS CON Annual Survey, psychiatric emergencies are the second most common reason people present to Acute Care Hospitals across the state (cardiac emergencies are at the top of the list). Our local Munson ER is reflective of this reality; in each of the last seven years people sought emergency services primarily because of their hearts and heads.

Book in the making for Whitmer
If they awarded frequent flyer miles for the number of times Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has received large doses of national media attention, she could spend the rest of her three year term flying around the world.
