‘Accountable’
‘Accountable’
To the editor: Will Bunek will bring accountability to our local government. As a former business person, he understands finance. 09/18/2024 05:51 PM

To the editor: Leelanau Township expects its leaders to focus on the economic and social good of our families, farmers and businesses. We expect them to listen carefully, conduct business in an open and constructive manner, and tell us the complete truth. 09/18/2024 05:51 PM

Support Ross
To the editor: I met Kama Ross almost 10 years ago. Over the last decade, I’ve spent time with her as a friend (she’s there for you), forester, volunteer, public servant, and advocate for peaceful, thoughtful democratic engagement. 09/18/2024 05:51 PM
Campbell endorsed
Campbell endorsed
To the editor: I’m writing to endorse Alan Campbell as a candidate for County Commissioner. I feel Al’s knowledge of state and local affairs will make him an asset to our commission. 09/18/2024 05:51 PM
Heaven’s gain
Heaven’s gain
To the Family of John Popa: My heart goes out to the Popa family with the sudden loss of John. Alan Campbell’s article eloquently described how John touched and molded organizations in Leelanau County for the benefit of all its citizens. 09/18/2024 05:51 PM
Not fiscally responsible
Not fiscally responsible
To the editor: The old saying “Actions speak louder than words” perfectly describes Lois Bahle. Her recent Enterprise ad claims she is “fiscally responsible” and supports “housing sustainability collaboration.” During her short commissioner term in 2022, she voted to raise property taxes. 09/18/2024 05:51 PM
Stepping up for the Zywicki family
Stepping up for the Zywicki family
People in the Cedar area are living up to the unincorporated village’s motto: “A Community That Cares.” Word spread quickly Labor Day after Richard Zywicki, (the hardware man) owner of Cedar Hardware, had a catastrophic golf cart accident. And it wasn’t long before people stepped forward to help. 09/12/2024 06:28 AM
‘Fear behind labeling’
‘Fear behind labeling’
To the editor: As a grade-schooler in 1958, during the Cold War, after giving a report on my family’s story of emigrating from Russia, I was accosted by an older classmate at recess. Finger in my face, he demanded, “Are you a pinko-commie?” I didn’t know what that was, but I knew it wasn’t a good thing. 09/12/2024 06:28 AM
Pave paradise?
Pave paradise?
To the editor: I oppose SBDNL/TART’s plan to destroy the existing environment (cut 7,000+ trees; build boardwalks through wetlands; and cut into protected sand dunes then build 25’ +/- high retaining walls to hold back the dunes) at the outrageous price tag of $4 million per mile. There are other options that SBDNL/TART could consider before they destroy the existing environment. 09/12/2024 06:28 AM
Attending meetings…
Attending meetings…
To the editor: Should attending meetings be a criteria for qualifying candidates, I’ve attended (BOC) and Committee meetings for 13 years, Bingham Township Planning meetings for 12 years and for the last 5 years Northwest Regional Airport Authority (NRAA) and Cherry Capital Airport committee meetings representing Leelanau County. As Chairman of the NRAA finance committee I am helping to oversee Cherry Capital Airport’s planned $110 million expansion project. 09/12/2024 06:28 AM
Breaking tasks into chunks
Breaking tasks into chunks
A couple weeks ago, I took vacation time to visit friends and family in New Hampshire. The highlight of the trip was my visit to Mount Cardigan. It’s a somewhat less imposing climb compared to many of the nearby White Mountains, at 3,155 feet above sea level. But in the words of another party of hikers who I encountered on the trail, “‘easier’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘easy.’” The weather was clear on the day of the hike, but several days of rain earlier that week made the hike pose two very different challenges. On the one hand, there was a pressure cooker: humidity trapped under the forest canopy in the valleys below the mount. On the other, was the summit: bare granite unshielded by tree cover and exposed to powerful, cold winds. 09/12/2024 06:28 AM
Character counts
Character counts
To the editor: In this Presidential Election, more than ever, character counts. Let’s not choose a candidate that has an extensive list of character flaws, rude behavior and current legal battles would fill pages. 09/12/2024 06:28 AM
